HOT SIPS, WARM HEARTS

By popular demand – and to help keep your wallet happy and hands warm – we’re bringing back our $7 Hot Toddy this month. The foundation of our Hot Toddy is a warm lemon-honey black tea that is enriched by the depth of whiskey, a spirit that captures the earthy essence of autumn in New England. A housemade lavender-clove reduction is folded in and the cocktail is finished with a sweet dose of Disaronno Amaretto and garnished with a lemon twist.

Even sweeter? We’ll be featuring Hot Apple Cider for $4 all month long!

EAT WELL, DO GOOD

November marks Diabetes Awareness Month and we’ve once again teamed up with our friends at Joslin Diabetes Center’s Asian American Diabetes Initiative to bring attention to diabetes and its impact on millions of Asian Americans. For thirty days, we will feature a specially printed menu filled with 20 diabetes-friendly dishes, carefully selected by a Joslin nutritionist, that will have you eating healthily and deliciously.

We’ll also be donating 10% of proceeds from our diabetes-friendly brown and black rice sales during the month of November to the AADI!

GOBBLE-GOBBLE, GIVE THANKS

At SHK, we are all about three things: tradition, family and food – which is why we are all about Thanksgiving! From November 17-23, make a reservation and indulge in chef specials like mala turkey ($15) or crispy turkey ($30).

DANGEROUSLY DELICIOUS

If you love spicy cocktails and tequila is your poison, say hello to The Devil’s Nest, this month’s cocktail special created by our innovative bar team just in time for Halloween. The Devil’s Nest might sound evil but the flavors are angelic, featuring sweet ingredients like passion fruit puree, lime juice and a dash of grenadine. Staying true to its name, it also packs some fiery flavors with muddled jalapenos that are shaken with tequila. Chile “horns” as a garnish bring it to life.

PUMPKIN HAPPINESS

There’s no denying our love for pumpkin and we’re bringing back a new rendition of last year’s popular Sweet Pumpkin Cakes; this time around, these treats are with red bean filling and pressed with one of our favorite Chinese symbols meaning “happiness.”

NOTE-WORTHY NOODLES

We’re bringing our obsession with Wheat Noodles to the next level this month by adding new toppings for you to choose from: Grandma’s Pork or Pickled Bean.

Noodle lovers, rejoice.

FRIENDS SUPPORTING FRIENDS, CC: @SIMKOSAYS

Last month, WHERE Magazine asked a group of Boston influencers about their current snack obsessions and our friend, Matt Simko, personality behind @SimkoSays, gave us a shout-out & it’s only right to return the favor! Here’s what he had to say:

“Cool crispy cucumbers with spicy sesame chili oil sauce and a dash of vinegar at Sumiao Hunan Kitchen in Kendall Square are the perfect spicy snack. To cool down a little, pair it with their Perpetual Motion orange, elderflower, and mint cocktail.”

And just like that, August is here…

As sad as we are to see another summer nearing its end, the action is heating up at SHK and we’re inspired to make the most out of these remaining weeks. Here’s what we have in store for you this month, including a baijiu-laced special, a prix-fixe dinner menu and live music performances.

MOVE OVER ROSÈ, IT’S TIME FOR BAIJIU

It’s time to move beyond the pink because WORLD BAIJIU DAY (Aug. 9) is here and there’s plenty of reasons to celebrate this Chinese spirit, starting with the fact that it’s the most consumed spirit in the world, of course. While the grain-based liquor sometimes gets a bad rap for its powerful flavor, it’s a wonderfully complex drink and we’re going to prove it.

At SHK, you can order Baijiu by the bottle including Maotai ($288), Wuliangye ($160) and Luhzou Laojiao ($98), or opt to start of slow with a one-ounce pour from the Hong Kong ($11) and Jiannanchun ($12) varietals. Our baijiu cocktails are great options for those seeking a sweeter taste of Chinese culture, including Sumiao’s Side Car mixing Hong Kong baijiu, Hardy VS cognac, cointreau, lemon reduction ($12); as well as the popular Perpetual Motion made with Mianzhu Daqu, blood orange, lime, elderflower liqueur and mint ($13). Our chefs are getting in on the action, too! Prepared table-side on a sizzling hot plate between August 6- August 12, take your taste buds on an trip to Hunan with our Sumiao’s Sizzling Baijiu Shrimp ($30 ), loaded with shrimp marinated in baijiu and oil and then sprinkled with a mix of soy sauce, scallions and peppers.

DINE OUT BOSTON

The Hub’s Dine Out Boston event is making a return on August 5th-10th & 12th-17th and we’ve designed a prix-fixe menu for $28 per person. Our first-ever Dine Out Boston menu in March received such positive feedback so we look forward to round two with this menu.

MUSIC SOOTHS THE SOUL & LOVE IS IN THE AIR

If you thought you missed your chance to enjoy one of our live music performances this summer, you’re in luck. We’ve added more musicians to the line-up and we will be hosting musical talents each week from Tuesday through Fridays beginning at 7pm. Whether you’re a fan of reggae, samba or traditional Chinese music, we’ll have performances across all genres. Check out our social media pages for weekly schedules and make sure to keep August 17th open on your calendar as we’ll be bringing in one of our favorite Chinese bands for Chinese Valentine’s Day!

It’s hard to believe it’s already July and we’ve been here in Kendall Square for a full year; time flies when you’re having fun! Here are our latest happenings and what to look forward to this month:

A NEW HUNAN SEAFOOD EXPERIENCE

Because New England summer and seafood go hand-in-hand, we’re bringing you a traditional Hunan experience from the sea that we guarantee can’t be beat. In addition to over a dozen new tapas and fresh chef specialties, seafood lovers can now relish in our new “Daily Catch” menu. Choose from lobster ($60), crawfish ($58), conch ($40), coral shrimp ($128) or white shrimp ($58), then select a cooking method and whether you prefer a spicy or ginger-scallion flavor.

For daily caught seafood, you must place your order 48 hours in advance with the exception of lobster and crawfish which will be available in limited quantities from Friday through Sunday.

Not a fan of seafood? We’ve got plenty of new veggie and meat-packed options for you, too. Try our new chilled and sweet Cold Snow Fungus & Pear Soup, a traditional Chinese dessert soup that balances the palate after spicy foods ($15/$5) as well as the healthful Stir-Fried Celery & Lily Bulbs made with macadamia nuts and sesame oil ($15). Nostalgic hometown favorites include the Baby Bamboo Ring with Minced Pork with the province’s most popular summer vegetable, bamboo shoots ($16) and the Steamed Egg Tofu with spicy minced pork ($15), a childhood favorite of SHK’s owner, Sumiao Chen. Spicy Shredded Pig’s Ear ($16), Spicy Chicken Gizzard stir fry ($16) and Twice Cooked Quail Eggs ($16) are available for those with more adventurous palate.

IF MUSIC BE THE FOOD OF LOVE, PLAY ON

Enjoying good food and live music with family and friends is a part of the Hunan DNA, so it’s only right we keep this tradition alive.

Every Thursday and Friday join us at 7pm as we welcome the city’s top musical talent across different genres and cultures to perform in our dining room.

A PATIO PARTY WITH CRAWFISH + BEER

Your chance to sit back and relax in true Hunan fashion is on July 22 from 2pm-5pm! Mala crawfish is the most popular and classic street food in our country and on summer nights you’ll typically find us on a patio with crawfish in one hand and a cold beer in the other. Now we’re bringing this to Kendall Square!

Tickets ($30 each) to our Crawfish + Beer Festival can now be purchased via Eventbrite and will include 3 lbs. of crawfish and a complimentary beer or mocktail. Our chef will be cooking out on the patio.

With a April’s weather leaving much to be desired, we are looking forward to a May filled with sunshine, spritzes and specials. Here is what we have in store for you this month:

SPRITZES & CAIPIRINHAS

We are spotlighting two of the world’s most celebrated spirits in our monthly cocktail specials: baijiu and caćhaça.

Strawberry-Baijiu Spritz – $12:

Although rare in the United States, baijiu is the most widely consumed spirit in the world making this twist on a spritz a must-try spring sip. With the unexpected spike of the baijiu incorporated, we’re taking it one shake further by replacing the typical white or rosé wine with a plum wine. The base liquors are rounded out by the subtle sweetness of lychee, housemade strawberry puree and ginger liqueur that is finished with soda water and served in festive tiki glassware.

Rosemary Caipirinha – $9:

Taking further inspiration from the top cocktail cities in the world, our second feature is the Rosemary Caipirinha. The national cocktail of Brazil, caipirinhas incorporate caćhaça which is the most common distilled alcoholic beverage in the South American country. Our take on this classic blends fresh lime, homemade rosemary syrup and caćhaça that is shaken vigorously and strained into a glass of ice and garnished with a fragrant rosemary sprig.

Cheers to spring!

HUNAN HOUR RETURNS

By popular demand, we are bringing back “Hunan Hour”! Savor full-sized appetizers at half the price with the purchase of any specialty cocktail each afternoon and late-night. Items that are available between $4-6 include favorites like the Nom Numb Chicken Wings, Wood-Ear Mushroom Salad, Five Spice-Braised Fresh Peanuts, Steamed Pork Sausage, Avocado meatballs, and more. MOTHER’S DAY | May 13th

Although mom deserves our utmost appreciation and love every day, Mother’s Day is a chance for you to go that extra mile and spoil her like the queen she is. Treat your mom to an afternoon in Hunan, sans passport, and at the end of the meal, we will send over a special pink rose bao dessert with red bean paste filling. Sweets for your sweet.

Chef Hua, our star female chef who is mom to twins, recommends ordering some bubbles and pairing them with our springtime specialties like the Sumiao Cajun-style scallops, duck yolk-breaded crispy shrimp or pan-seared yellow croaker. The tastes of the season shine in these creations, just like the star mom is!

VITAMIN D

Our patio, situated in the heart of Kendall Square, has your seat waiting any time. A perfect respite for getting in some Vitamin D during your lunch break or as an urban oasis by-night, we serve our full menus al fresco in a social setting.

We have decided to extend our 10%-off takeout orders promotion through the end of the year so when you’re in a jam or just need a night off from the kitchen, place your order via phone or online and enjoy authentic Hunanese home-cooking in the comfort of your home.

Happy April! It’s starting to (almost) feel like spring, at long last. Here is what we have been up to lately, and what you can expect to see at SHK this month!

PHILANTHROPY

On March 25, we teamed up with BLR by Shojo, Feng Shui and China Pearl to host A Pinch of Ginger to benefit Joslin Diabetes Center’s Asian American Diabetes Initiative (AADI). Nearly 150 people came out to support the cause while chowing on a brunch buffet filled with diabetes-creations and sipping on ginger-themed cocktails. We were able to raise nearly $5,000 for the AADI, and we couldn’t be happier to support a cause so dear to our hearts!

Catch us this month cooking up a storm at their annual springtime culinary event, A Taste of Ginger, hosted on April 9 at the Museum of Fine Arts! We will be serving whole wheat pork bao and Wood-ear mushroom with cucumber salad.

PASSIONFRUIT

We’re back shaking up a new monthly cocktail special that will have you channeling your inner tropics. Meet our new Passionfruit Mojito – created by beverage director Vinicius Stein – with white & Malibu rums, fresh limes, muddled mint leaves and passionfruit that is topped with soda and finished with a lime wheel and mint bunch. The price of sipping your way to sunshine? Only $7 all month.

PICKUP

Let’s face it: cooking can be a drag after a long day at the office. This is your final month to get 10% off all takeout orders made online or via phone!

PATIO

It’s the most wonderful time of the year… PATIO SEASON! Make sure to grab a seat and get some sunshine while you’re on your lunch break because everyone could use a little Vitamin D after this winter.
