DINE OUT BOSTON

We’re participating in Dine Out Boston again by dishing out a customizable three-course dinner menu from March 1-6 and March 8-13 for only $28. This is a great time to experiment with our vast menu to help determine your new Hunanese favorites!

SIP ON THIS

We celebrate National Moscow Mule Day on the 3rd and International Whiskey Day on the 27th….which brings us to our March cocktails.

Our first is the Lucky Mule, made with whiskey, midori, lime, and ginger beer. Talk about refreshing!
Our second is the Sunday Sunlight made with flavored vodka, aperol, tea, lemon. Bring on the warmer weather!

GREENS GALORE

March we celebrate the start of Spring. Spring is always about rebirth, and in Hunan culture, we believe seasonal vegetables should be enjoyed at the right time of the year. We’ve got two new seasonal vegetable dishes for you this month: Garlic Green Lettuce and Jade Green Celtuce. A little crunch, a lot of yum. And both are super healthy too. What’s not to love?

Update On Our We Stand With Wuhan Initiative

We are extremely proud to announce that since February 16th, we have collected $11,182 as part of our We Stand With Wuhan initiative as of 2/28/2019. The check for this amount is in the mail to the Tongji Medical College Overseas Alumni Association (TJMCOAA). These funds will be exclusively used to help and support the local hospitals and clinicians in Wuhan, many of whom are Sumiao’s friends from her university days.

In case you missed it, through April 12th all sales of either our Hot Dry Noodles or the Beef & Egg Rice Noodles dishes will be donated to the TJMCOAA. Please join us so that we can all help make a difference. And for those of you who have dined with us already, we are very grateful for your help.

For more information and daily updates on our donation progress, please see details here.

CHINESE LANTERN FESTIVAL

The Lantern Festival falls on February 8th. This light-filled festival celebrates family reunions and society and includes activities like moon gazing, lighting lanterns, riddles, and eating rice balls. Our Tang Yuan dish special from last month will stay throughout February, and the Lantern Festival is the perfect day to try them.

While you’re enjoying the Tang Yuan, sip on our Open Sesame cocktail made with Nigori, white chocolate, soy milk, and sesame. The look and taste mimics our Tang Yuan dish with a white outside, and black sesame ball inside. And it’s delish!

VALENTINE’S DAY DINNER AT SUMIAO

Whether you’re spending February 14th with your loved one or with your gal pals, we’ve got an amazing prix-fixe menu for you. For just $52.0, you get an app, an entree, and dessert. But why $52.0? Fun fact: 520 pronounced in Chinese is I love you!

SIP ON THIS

We’ve got two additional delicious cocktail specials this month and what better way to try them both than by bringing your Valentine to Sumiao. On top of Valentine’s Day, the month of February is National Chocolate Lover’s Month. Celebrate with our new drink, The Love Sip cocktail, a sweet and creamy delight made of vodka, Godiva white chocolate liqueur, and strawberry. Tastes just like strawberry yogurt but better.

Our second cocktail, Moonlight Walk, is a refreshing beverage that pairs well with spicy food. It’s a tasty mix of cucumber vodka, raspberry vodka, Pimm’s no. 1, lime, tea, and soda. Which one will you try first?

CHINESE NEW YEAR 2020 – THE YEAR OF THE RAT

Chinese New Year is right around the corner and 2020 marks The Year of the Rat. The rat is the first of all zodiac animals, and in Chinese culture, a sign of wealth. In ancient Chinese culture, rats were a sign of wealth and were often prayed to for reproduction.

If you were born in 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, or 2008, your Chinese zodiac sign is the rat. The rat is independent, hardworking, and successful in her career. Positive traits include charm, honesty, and an easygoing personality.

CELEBRATE WITH US!

Chinese New Year is more than just about a family reunion, but an event full of food and drinks. To celebrate, we’re dishing out six new menu items and three new cocktails. We’ll be offering these specials for the whole month of January, so make sure to stop by to try them.

DIG RIGHT IN

We’re proud to share that Sumiao Hunan Kitchen is the first Chinese restaurant in the entire New England region to launch Impossible Beef dishes on its menu. Our fall/winter menu features four delicious Impossible Beef dishes: Impossible Beef on Fire, Pickled Bean & Impossible Beef over Noodle, Picked Bean with Impossible Beef, and Impossible Beef over Rice Crust. Impossible Beef is made entirely from plants, but features the same aroma, flavor and nutritional value as traditional beef. Come try it out for yourself!

A Royal Cocktail

From now until the end of the year, we will be serving our Cinderella Carriage cocktail for $8. Crafted with pumpkin liqueur, pumpkin eggnog, and topped off with pumpkin whipped cream, this dreamy pumpkin cocktail is an absolute must-try drink!

Diabetes Awareness Month

November is National Diabetes Month which raises awareness of a cause that is very important to our founder, Sumiao Chen. Before becoming a restaurant owner, Sumiao worked for years as a pharmaceutical researcher, spending a significant amount of time on diabetes-related projects. Sumiao is always looking for ways to give back to the diabetes community, which is why during the month of November, 10% of all brown and black rice sales will be donated to the Asian American Diabetes Initiative (AADI).

Additionally, we’ve teamed up with AADI to create a menu of diabetes-friendly dishes. Our mission is not only to create flavorful, delicious food but also to focus on the health benefits of the food that we’re serving our customers. Join us this month and together we can help make an impact on the diabetes community.

Thanksgiving Special

Starting on November 23 and running through November 29, we’ll be featuring our Thanksgiving special. For $26, you can pretend it’s Thanksgiving all week long by feasting on our spicy turkey with pumpkin!

November Live Music Lineup

Our live music lineup is back again and we’re bringing you folk, jazz, pop, and more! There’s no better place to be on Thursday and Friday nights starting at 6:30 p.m. Live music and authentic Hunan cuisine – what more could you ask for?

Our Spicy Twist on a New England Fall Favorite

Everyone has their favorite fall traditions, but one that us Bostonians particularly love is enjoying Shipyard Brewing Company’s famed Pumpkinhead beer with cinnamon-sugar on the rim. This year, we decided to kick it up a notch and put our own spin on the classic cinnamon-sugar rim by adding tajin chili powder for some extra spice. That’s right…we’re putting the SPICE in pumpkin spice this fall season.

A Truly Eye-Catching Halloween Cocktail

In Chinese ghost stories, Meng Po, the Lady of Forgetfulness, would serve a special drink to souls so that they could forget their past lives before reincarnation. The Waters of Oblivion, our special cocktail for October, is our take on this ancient ghost tale as we celebrate Halloween later this month. It’s made with Jiannanchun Baijiu, active charcoal, Chamford, Mulberry, and lemon, and it’s topped with a very “eye-catching” garnish of luxardo cherry and lychee. Priced at $8, the Waters of Oblivion is available throughout the month of October. It’s truly a cocktail you have to see to believe!

October’s Star-Studded Live Music Lineup

We’re providing you the best of the best this month with our lineup of live music performances! We have pop, folk, jazz, and everything in between, so be sure to stop in on Thursday and Friday nights from 6:30-9:30 p.m. while basking in the comforts of our delicious Hunan cuisine.

Additional October Features

We’re also featuring a number of other October drink specials, including Decoy Rosé for $9 a glass or $34 for a bottle, in addition to a variety of canned sakes. We also will be selling Guinness’s “Over the Moon” Milk Stout which boasts a smooth and sweet flavor profile with notes of cocoa and fresh coffee. Lastly, our new Lamplighter rotation will be “The Werewolves of Cambridge” Porter for $9.

Mid-Autumn Festival

Come celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival with us on Friday, September 13! All of our guests will receive complimentary mooncakes – the delicious treats that are traditionally served on this special day – along with drink specials and local craft beer. If the sun is shining, you better believe our outdoor patio will be open, too! Space may be limited, so be sure to reserve your spot now.

To give our college students a proper welcome back to the city, we’re offering our colorful and refreshing “Maitai in the Forbidden City” cocktail for just $6 this month. Made with white rum, apple rum, orange juice, and pineapple juice, this drink is one that you won’t want to miss!

SHK & Dine Out Boston

This year, we’re participating in the annual Dine Out Boston event again. Enjoy a $28 prix fixe menu — and don’t forget, Thursday and Fridays we have live music too!

New Summer Drink — Beijing Berry Fizz

Move over, Rover! The Beijing Berry Fizz is your new best friend during the dog days of August. Made with Jian Nan Chun Baijiu, strawberry, and champagne, this little drink is just the pick-me-up you’ll need on those hot muggy days.

Summer Dessert

One thing that’s always bothered us about summertime is how heavy, creamy, melty desserts just don’t quite it cut in the heat. We are introducing Soft Crystal Jelly desserts to scratch that itch. It comes in two flavors: Honey and Red Bean. Cool, light, and perfect for a slow evening on the patio.

New Hours

Here at Sumiao, we like to take it easy over the summer. We’re kicking our feet up and changing up our opening hours:

Sun-Wed: 11am-10pm
Thurs-Sat: 11am-11 pm

Here’s to more time with family and friends!

Hunan Hour

While we’re on the topic of summer hours, slip out a bit early to join us for Hunan Hour, every weekday from 3:30 – 5:30. We offer a $5 appetizer with each drink order. Don’t worry, our bartenders are sworn to secrecy.

Click here to see our new Hunan Hour menu. See you in our updated patio.

Live Music

As Sumiao’s youngest would say, our live music lineup is “lit.” Every Thursday and Friday, we feature local artists of different genres from 6:30 to 9:30. Enjoy good food, good music, and good atmosphere with us at SHK!

Limited Time Zongzi Rice Dumplings

Every year, Sumiao’s family celebrates the Dragon Boat Festival with rice dumplings (粽子 zòngzi). The Hunan way of rice dumplings is to wrap sticky rice in bamboo leaves and steam it like a tamale. We let it cool, unwrap the leaves, and dip the rice in cane sugar. It’s perfect as an appetizer or a dessert. $2 each, available Friday June 7th to Sunday June 9th.

The Dragon Boat Festival celebrates the beloved Chinese poet and statesman Qu Yuan (340-278 BC). When he heard that his state of Chu had been vanquished by a neighboring state, he threw himself into the Miluo River in grief. Every year, fisherman race their boats to search for his body and villagers throw zongzi into the river as an offering to him. Commemorate Qu Yuan with us during this important festival!

Summer’s Here, That Means Patio and Sangria

Our patio is officially open to welcome the summer! People-watch our corner of Kendall Square with a chill pitcher of Strawberry Lemon White Sangria (it’s even got a hint of ginger). Prefer something tangy? Sip our Rosemary Capirinha, our twist on Brazil’s national drink. Or class it up, with our Cucumber Cooler, a refreshing take on gin & tonic.

Live Music Every Thursday and Friday

Sumiao is not just about food. From ambiance to service, we provide a full meal experience. Part of that experience is music. Every Thursday and Friday from 6:30 to 9:30, we host live performances from local bands of all genres from jazz to pop to world. This month, we feature:

Join us as we eat, drink, and relax during our live music nights!
