Although February was a short month, we happily packed a lot in! We celebrated the Chinese New Year, the Year of the Dog, all month by donating 10% of sales from our seven La Rou creations to the Animal Rescue League’s Boston Animal Rescue Collaborative (BARC) organization. We’re happy to report that we raised $711.9 to help support BARC’s mission of developing Boston’s new generation of dedicated animal rights advocates as well as supporting animal rescue nonprofits in Cambridge, Boston and Somerville.

We know all of the pups in our SHK family, including Sumiao’s Huckabee, are proud we were able to help out their friends!

March is going to be an equally busy month filled with delicious comfort, ginger-laced cocktails and special events. Now, without further ado…

A Pinch of Ginger

We’re gearing up to participate in the distinguished “A Taste of Ginger” event hosted by Joslin Diabetes Center’s Asian American Diabetes Initiative (AADI) in April. A cause close to our hearts, the AADI at Joslin works to enhance the quality of life and health outcomes for Asian Americans living with diabetes and collaborates with Joslin as they work to find a cure.

In anticipation of the event, we’d like to first invite you to join us for a one-time Sunday brunch event dubbed “A Pinch of Ginger” on March 25 from 11:30am-2:00pm. This event-with-a-cause will serve as an exclusive preview to bring together friends, neighbors, Boston-area foodies and medical communities alike to enjoy dozens of creative “diabetes-friendly” brunch dishes, ginger-themed cocktails, live entertainment and more.

Joining forces with us for this buffet-style brunch will be owner Sumiao Chen’s other restaurant, Fengshui, as well as China Pearl and BLR by Shojo under the leadership of Brian Moy, whose family will be honored at this year’s “A Taste of Ginger” event.

Proceeds from both Sumiao’s “A Pinch of Ginger” and Joslin’s “A Taste of Ginger” will benefit the Asian American Diabetes Initiative (AADI) at Joslin Diabetes Center.

Tickets cost $35 per person and can be purchased online or in-person on a first come, first serve basis. To purchase tickets or to find out more information, please visit this link.

We hope to see you there!

SIP ONCE, SIP TWICE

This month, we’re tapping some of the world’s most ancient spirits and spices for our two new specialty cocktails. In March, our drink masters will infuse ginger into modern interpretations of classic libations while incorporating secret Chinese twists to delight your palates. Our “ginger” theme is inspired by our dedicated support of Joslin Diabetes Center’s Asian American Diabetes Initiative (AADI).

HONG-KONG MULE:

Available for only $5 in March, the Hong-Kong Mule puts baijiu in the spotlight. With its billion-strong fan base in China making it the best-selling liquor in the world, baijiu is little understood in the Western world making this a must-try cocktail for the spirits enthusiast. Our Hong-Kong Mule marries HKB Hong-Kong baijiu and hibiscus liqueur that is topped off with ginger beer and a splash of fresh lime, garnished with fresh mint springs and a lime wedge.

THE EMPEROR:

While some say secrets are no fun, this might change your mind. We’re letting our exclusive SHK club in on some classified information: the reveal of our secret cocktail menu. Available by request only for our most loyal customers, one of the standouts includes The Emperor created with muddled fresh ginger and lime, Peloton de la Muerte Mezcal, Don Julio tequila, Crème Yvette, hibiscus liqueur, agave nectar and lime reduction that is delicately garnished with a mint leaf.

DINE OUT BOSTON

It is our first “Dine Out Boston” and we will be dishing out a customizable three-course dinner menu from March 18-23 and March 25-30 for only $38. This is a great time to experiment with our vast menu to help determine your new Hunanese favorites! Check out our menu here.

10% OFF = TAKEOUT

Through April, we are offering 10% off pickup orders exclusively. Whether you just need a night off from cooking, want a quick and healthful lunch while grinding out some annual reports or to take the guesswork out of hosting a party at home, we have you covered. Order online or by calling (617) 945-0907.

If it’s a snowy March, let Sumiao Hunan Kitchen come to you via Caviar, DoorDash and GrubHub.

February is upon us! Although it may be the shortest month of the year, it’s one of SHK’s favorites and there certainly won’t be a shortage of reasons to come visit us this month.

Chinese New Year, Valentine’s Day, over 30 new menu items and special offers…now, all we need is you!

A PAW-SPEROUS CHINESE NEW YEAR

Chinese New Year is right around the corner and 2018 marks a year to celebrate and emulate the most loyal and truest animal companion in the Chinese zodiac. In honor of “man’s best friend” and The Year of the Dog – and because Chinese New Year is a special time of feasting with family, celebrations and gift-giving – we’ll be donating 10% of all sales from our La Rou dish selections all month long to the Boston Animal Rescue Collaborative (BARC) which supports local animal shelters and advocacy initiatives.

What is La Rou? Think fancy bacon, Chinese-style. It’s widely popular in the Hunan region of China for its savory and rich smoky-zest flavor. The technique and preparation behind La Rou can take up to five days to reach its worthwhile tenderized and favorable end result. Savor in any of these La Rou dishes and help us give back to BARC:

  • Steamed La Rou & Shang Gan: Tender la rou steamed with firm five-spiced tofu, flavored with pepper and fermented black soybean ($9)
  • La Rou With Mushrooms: Perfect balance between sweet, salty, smokey and briny. Tender la rou paired varieties of mushroom to create layers of texture ($28)
  • La Rou With Dried Radish: Traditional Hunan dried daikon radish pairing with smokey bacon, strong flavor profile leaves an unforgettable unique taste on the tip of your tongue, pair well with grains ($28)
  • Braised La Rou with Shang Gan: Thinly sliced la rou and five-spiced pressed tofu slow braised in a rich savory broth ($25)
  • Steamed La Rou: Thinly sliced la rou topped with garlic, dried chili and fermented black soybean steamed until golden and tender, savory with a light kick of spice ($25)
  • Wok’d Fried Rice: Shredded la rou stir fried with lettuce, egg and rice, easy ingredients mixed well to create a complex flavor ($15)
  • La Niu Rou with Dried White Pepper: Juicy smoked dried beef flank slices stir fried with dried white pepper, savory spicy and smokey ($36)

In addition to showing love for our favorite four-legged friends, we’ll be offering up gifts for our human friends too as our way of saying “thank you” and wishing you good luck in the new year. Spend $100 at SHK during Chinese New Year (February 16-February 18) and receive a $10 SHK gift card presented in a red envelope, a symbol of good luck and warding off evil spirits.

ROMANCE WITH PEACHES & PRIX-FIXE

We’re putting our heart into our first Kendall Square Valentine’s Day with a lovingly-themed prix fixe menu for-two including a Peach Sangria for sipping and three-courses for just $78 per couple. Choose two appetizers, two entrees and one dessert from a wide selection of Hunan classics (see menu here). Reservations are encouraged and can be made online or by calling us at 617.945.0907.

NEW YEAR, NEW FLAVORS

From new weekday lunch offerings to small plates to our very own Sumiao’s favorite traditional Chinese treat growing up, we’re bringing you over 30 new and unique flavors (yes, you read that right). Who thinks they can try them all? New menu items include the Rice in Chicken Broth ($12), Sizzling Calamari ($22), Slow-Braised Lamb Pot ($36), Street Style Clam ($18), Sumiao Cajun Style Scallop ($30), Steamed Pork Sausage ($7) and much more!

DANGEROUSLY DELICIOUS

We are continuing our tradition of featuring monthly cocktail specials and through February 28, our $8 “Not Your Grandma’s Apple Pie” transforms everyone’s favorite childhood dessert into a dangerously delicious grownup treat. Combining smooth whiskey with a house-made apple cider reduction, muddled lemon zest, a splash of ginger liqueur and two dashes of aromatic bitters, this cocktail is like a dessert in a glass… with a buzz.

TEN-OFF TAKE-OUT

Sometimes you just need a break from the kitchen; we understand and we’re happy to help. Enjoy a delicious meal from our Hunanese kitchen in the comfort of your own home with 10% off all SHK take-out orders via our website from February through April!

If braving the elements proves too much, don’t forget that we’ll always come to you, too! Order up your customized Hunanese feast through our delivery partners:Caviar, DoorDash and GrubHub.

With the New Year, we introduce new menu features and special offers. Grab a seat by our fireplace or enjoy Sumiao in the comfort of your own home all winter long.

SIPPING SAKETINIS

We are continuing our tradition of featuring a monthly cocktail special in the New Year. Through January 31, sip on our Saketini, an elegant balance of Grey Goose vodka with Diaginjo sake that is garnished with a refreshing cucumber slice. Considered the pinnacle of a sake brewer’s art, Diaginjo is a super-premium type of sake. It can be differentiated through its rice-polishing ratio, which removes the outer layer of the grain that produces unwanted flavors and instead yields a cleaner, more delicate and luxurious taste. In keeping with those New Year’s resolutions for a more healthful lifestyle, Diaginjo has no preservatives or additives so there is less guilt when you indulge during a night out on the town!

By popular demand we’ll also continue shaking up our November and December specialty cocktails, the Eggnog Rum Punch and Hot Toddy.

DINNER + DIGESTIF

If you are resolving to cut sweets from your diet this year, try ordering up one of our new Digestif Spirits instead of dessert. Available post-meal, our new feature menu is a collection of single malt scotches, cognacs, cordials and after-dinner drinks.

If you’re opting for a liquid dessert, might we suggest the Chocolate Hazelnut Martini?

GONE FISHING

Seafood is brainfood so kickstart your productivity this month by indulging in our trio of chef specials:

Fish Platter – red braised whole tilapia flavored with black bean chili sauce and garnished with ginger, scallions, green and red peppers
Furious Frog – a twist on our signature Angry Frog creation, only spicier (you’ll need a bit of heat with how the winter is shaping up!)
2018 Delight – a bowl of all our favorite things, including egg-wrapped fish paste, meatballs, bamboo shoots, calamari, pork, sea cucumber and more

SHK DELIVERS

If braving the elements proves too much, we’ll come to you! Order up your customized Hunanese feast through our delivery partners: Caviar, DoorDash and GrubHub.

HOT TODDY, WARM HEARTS

By popular demand, we are back with a new $7 cocktail this month that keeps your wallet happy and hands warm. The foundation of our Hot Toddy is a warm lemon-honey black tea that is enriched by the depth of whiskey, a spirit that captures the earthy essence of autumn in New England. Spiked tea, FTW.
