National Tea Day

Let’s celebrate National Tea Day on April 21st! Drinking tea is an ancient practice in China. Scholars believe people in the Yunnan Province in south China were the first to drink tea, which they considered a form of medicine. Once people started sipping brewed tea leaves, the practice spread across China and eventually across all of Asia. Today, 60 countries including the United States grow tea.

To celebrate National Tea Day with us, consider sipping on one of our many teas from MEM tea. We’re thrilled to be a partner with MEM, a nearby company that operates a tea shop and training center in North Cambridge, MA. Sumiao proudly offers a comprehensive selection of their tea varieties, including white, green, black, oolong, pu-erh, and herbal tisane, making us the sole restaurant to carry each of their teas. Our tea menu features authentic Chinese tea as well as an assortment of herbal infusions. At Sumiao, we understand the significance of tea in Chinese culture, which is why we prioritize the proper training of our staff in tea types, their health benefits, and distinctive flavors.

Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year, is a 15-day festival in China and Chinese communities around the world. Legend has it that thousands of years ago a monster named Nian (“Year”) would attack villagers at the beginning of the year. The villagers would use loud noises, bright lights, and the color red to chase the monster away. It is now tradition to celebrate with these things, along with firecrackers, red clothing and decorations, and lanterns. People are often given money in colorful red envelopes. It is a time for feasting and visiting with family members to honor relatives who have died.

The first day of the New Year begins at midnight and continues after the New Year’s Eve celebration and family reunion dinner. It is a traditional practice to light fireworks, burn bamboo sticks and firecrackers, and to make as much of a din as possible to chase off the evil spirits as encapsulated by nian of which the term Guo Nian (过年) was derived.

Chinese New Year 2024

Year of the Dragon

2024 is the Year of the Dragon, beginning on February 10th, 2024. The Dragon is also associated with the years 2012, 2000, 1988, 1976, 1964, and 1952. People born in Dragon years usually possess natural courage, tenacity, and intelligence, often displaying enthusiasm and confidence.

In Chinese culture, the Dragon holds a significant place as an auspicious and extraordinary creature, unparalleled in talent and excellence. It symbolizes power, nobility, honor, luck, and success. Consequently, 2024 is forecasted to bring about opportunities, changes, and challenges. If you’re seeking a shift in your current lives, this year might offer a favorable chance.
The act of greeting and blessing during Chinese New Year is called 拜年 (bài nián), which literally means to pay a visit to family and friends for the New Year with gifts. In return, the grandparents and elders will give the younger generation red envelopes (Hong Bao). The money in red envelopes is also known as 压岁钱(yā suì qián). Literally, it is “money to anchor the year.” By giving the children the money, the elders also hope to pass on a year of good fortune and blessings.

It is our tradition at Sumiao to give colorful red envelopes to our guests and we will be doing so during dinner service on Chinese New Year’s Eve for all dine-in guests. Those who place takeout orders will receive something special, too!

Each sip unveils a story, reflecting centuries of tradition and deep cultural significance.

Live Music at Sumiao

Ready to sing and dance with us at Sumiao? Come join us on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6-9pm for some of the best live music in town. We sure do love our musical guests!

Musician Highlights: Dwayne Haggins

He’s been described as “the love child of Hank Williams and Otis Redding.” “The John Legend of rockabilly.” And even, “the ‘what-took-you-so-long?’ fusion of Elvis Presley and Marvin Gaye.” At every performance, whether in a venerable metropolitan concert hall or a grimy dive in an anonymous strip mall, Dwayne Haggins is always at work.

Happy Birthday Sumiao and USA!

This month we’re celebrating two major events: America’s birthday and Sumiao Hunan Kitchen’s 6th anniversary! We’re so grateful to have been open for six years thanks to the support from all of you. To our guests, loyal fans, readers, and followers: we thank you for allowing us to serve you! To express our gratitude, we would like to offer ten of you the chance to bring a significant other to join us for a complimentary meal at our birthday celebration. We will be holding this event on Monday, July 24th with limited reservations. Please fill out this form before July 7th for a chance for you and a guest to attend the party. We will reach out to the winners the week of July 10th.

Independence Day Picnics

If you’re in town for the 4th, come celebrate with us! Our patio will be open all day (weather permitting). Or, grab some friends and do a Sumiao takeout picnic. So delicious!

1. Cumin Lamb Rack
2. Double Cooked Five-Spice Duck
3. Spicy Cumin Lotus Root
4. Avocado Impossible Meatballs – Enjoy this on National Avocado Day on 7/31!

Cheers! July Drink Specials

We’re so excited to share three new cocktails for July! Sip on these summer specials:
1. Huckleberry Mule (mocktail) – Huckleberry Lavender Syrup, Lime, Ginger Beer
2. Summer Oasis – Lillet Blanc, Rye Whiskey, Cointreau, Lemon
3. Blue Hawaii – Rum, Vodka, Blue Curacao, Coconut Cream, Pineapple, Lime
We’ve also added two new beers: Switchback Ale and Notch NA Hazy IPA. Switchback Ale is Vermont’s #1 selling craft beer. It is an unfiltered, reddish-amber ale that’s particularly well balanced. Notch Brewing’s Non-Alcoholic Hazy IPA is similar to a traditional IPA with a tropical aroma and soft, juicy flavor.

New Tea at Sumiao

New tea alert! We are thrilled to be partnering with MEM tea, a local brand that runs their own tea shop and training center in North Cambridge, MA. Sumiao is the only restaurant that carries one of each of their tea types: white, green, black, oolong, pu-erh, and herbal tisane. Our new tea menu serves authentic Chinese tea plus a variety of herbal tea.

Drinking tea is an important aspect of Chinese culture, so we ensure that our staff is properly trained on the types of tea, their benefits, and flavor profiles.
