A Special Story of A Special Cocktail

Although you may have missed this event, a special cocktail, Bernstein on Essex, was created by Brian for this dinner event. And we will be featuring it for the month of August.

As we have since 2020, we’ve teamed up with Mamaleh’s Delicatessen for their Christmas in July event. We’ve really enjoyed participating in this multicultural event to show our appreciation for one another, especially given that we share the same community and industry. We provided food to Mamaleh’s so they could put a Chinese spin on their Jewish food. It has always been a super successful event and we are proud to work together.
The tradition of Jews eating food on Christmas was forged in New York City’s Lower East Side. There were a lot of similarities between the two cuisines, both favor chicken broth, lots of garlic and onions, vegetables, and sweet and sour flavors. There was also the Kosher appeal, as Chinese cuisine is light on dairy ingredients so there was little threat of mixing milk and meat. In 1957 Solomon Bernstein left his father’s butcher business on Ludlow Street and started Bernstein on Essex. Originally established as a Kosher delicatessen, Bernstein began offering Cantonese style favorites alongside the more traditional fare in 1959. The cocktail we created for this event is The Bernstein on Essex, a combination of the Chinese spirit, Baijiu, with Rye Whisky, pineapple, celery juice, and soda. It is a take on Dr. Brown’s Cel-Ray soda, an iconic celery flavored soft drink popular in Jewish delicatessens and communities.

Alex’s musical interests as a youth were, shall we say, eclectic but he ultimately developed a love for acoustic and traditional music while attending Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. Graduating with a degree in Neurobiology in 2011, Alex returned to the vibrant Boston music scene, studying privately with Berklee School of Music’s ineffable John McGann. National Chinese Language Day

April 20th is National Chinese Language Day and we want to give a shoutout to our hard-working team. It is because of each of our staff members that we are able to open the doors each day to serve our community. Fun fact: Sumiao is supported by a government grant to offer employees free English classes. Every afternoon, a teacher comes to the restaurant (or via zoom during the pandemic) to teach. We’ve been doing this for three years now and even some of our English-speaking employees are learning Chinese. It’s great to see our employees correctly pronouncing our Chinese dishes and practicing with their coworkers.

National Tea Day
April 21st

Right after National Chinese Day comes National Tea Day on April 21st. Drinking tea is an ancient practice in China. Scholars believe people in the Yunnan Province in south China were the first to drink tea, which they considered a form of medicine. Once people started sipping brewed tea leaves, the practice spread across China and eventually across all of Asia. Today, 60 countries including the United States grow tea.

To celebrate National Tea Day on April 21st, consider sipping on one of our many teas from Numi and Tea Forte. We love the Green Mango Peach for a sweet pick-me-up and the Citrus Mint for something perfect for Spring.
