Mother's Day
Mother's Day

This Mother’s Day, Sumiao shared the story of the woman who shaped her most—her mom.
Once a pianist, her mother faced unimaginable challenges during the Cultural Revolution. When Sumiao’s father was imprisoned for his art, many urged her mother to walk away. But she stood by him, working cleaning jobs and writing street posters to support both families through the hardest of times.
After the Revolution, the two rebuilt their lives and launched an art business together. What started on the streets of Hunan grew into a respected gallery and import company that thrived for over 40 years—making her one of the region’s first female entrepreneurs.
The two life lessons that stayed with Sumiao? Independence and kindness. “No matter what someone’s going through, treat them with love—” she shared. Her favorite quote from her mom: “Never give up your independence. The only person you should depend on is yourself.”

Our manager, Meggie, also opened up about her greatest role model—her mom.
She began her career as a nurse, but never stopped pushing herself to grow. When the family couldn’t afford to send Maggie to school, her mom started learning on her own, memorizing the dictionary page by page. Her determination led her to become a highly respected journalist.
She eventually earned master’s degrees in both law and journalism, all while using her voice to expose hidden truths and protect the vulnerable, often at great personal risk.
Maggie heard it all: the struggles, the strength, and the unshakable passion to do good. Today, she carries that same resilience into her own leadership. A favorite quote from her mom: “Anything that can be solved with money means it is not big enough.”
