Lantern Festival

On the 15th day of the first lunar month, two weeks after Chinese New Year, another important traditional Chinese festival, the Chinese Lantern Festival or Yuan Xiao Jie or Yuanxiao Festival (元宵节), is celebrated. It marks the first full moon of the new lunar year and the end of the Chinese New Year (Spring Festival) period. Chinese Lantern Festival 2023 will be celebrated on Sunday February 5th, 2023. On the night of the Chinese Lantern Festival, streets are decorated with colorful lanterns, often with riddles written on them. People eat sweet rice balls called tangyuan, watch dragon and lion dances, and set off fireworks.
Here at Sumiao, we will be serving our delicious tangyuan, a Chinese dessert consisting of balls of glutinous rice flour and water that are boiled and served in a hot broth or syrup. Join us at the restaurant or order takeout on Sunday, February 5th for this special treat.

Chef Zhang's Recommendations

Want to know a great way to try Hunan Chinese food for the first time? Ask our team for recommendations! Every month our head Chef Zhang shares a few favorites that we’d love you to try.

1. 家常手撕包菜 Shaoshan Cabbage – garlic, dried chili, aged vinegar
2. 素描豆腐煲 Sumiao Tofu Pot – ground pork, oyster sauce, chive, garlic
3. 香酥鱼片 Crispy Fish Fillet – (egg), chili, mala sauce, ginger, garlic, scallion
4.进击的湘辣鸡 Spicy Popcorn Chicken – (egg), chili, garlic, ginger, mala sauce, scallion

All of these dishes pair wonderfully with our fine red wine collection. Keep reading for more details on our new bottles.

The Most LOVE-ly Cocktails

Introducing three new cocktails this month!

1. Love Letter – Roku gin, sake, cherry liqueur, St. Germain, salted cherry
2. Paloma’s Kiss – Tequila, strawberry puree, grapefruit, lime, soda
3. Cupid Fizz (Mocktail) – Lychee, blood orange, grapefruit soda
We also think our Strawberry Nigori Sake is a perfect treat to share. This nigori sake-based liqueur is the product of five years of trial and error. After trying more than 1,000 flavors, the brewers decided this one reigned supreme.
The strawberry flavor is all natural. This strawberry flavor is added to a mellow nigori that has been a local favorite for 50 years. We recommend serving as is, on the rocks.

Drink Wine Day

We’re very excited to share our curated selection of red wines with you.
1. Favia Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon
2. Opus One Red Blend
3. Masi Costasera Amarone Classic
4.Dominus Estate Red Blend
5. Groth Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

As always, please ask a server or bartender for recommendations on what to enjoy with your meal.

Super Bowl LVII

Sunday, February 12th marks Super Bowl LVII. While we don’t yet know who will play in the big game, we know it’s a big day for takeout! Fun fact: the Super Bowl is the single largest at-home party event and the second-largest day for food consumption. Many of us get takeout to dine on while watching the game. Be sure to place your orders early to have it hot and ready for kickoff.

Musician Highlight: Mimi Wankenne

Mimi, who speaks seven languages, loves to express herself with music. She picked up the guitar at 8 years old and today, it is still her best friend. Her debut album was recorded in 2004 at 22 yeas old. The album is an international pop collection with covers of the Cranberries, Elton John, Ters for Fear, and Brian Adams. She has since released a second album in partnership with Paulo Brito on vocals and piano. She then gave up the state to follow love in China and spend five years there. She then landed in California to release yet another album with stories about leaving Brazil to follow love. Her music expresses her feelings and stories through brazilian rhythms. We are so excited to have her on stage at Sumiao!
